Endometrial Ablation is a minor surgical procedure which is used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. There are several techniques available; Dr. Drake-Albert prefers Hydrothermal Ablation (Genesys HTA System) and Nova-sure. Using either technique, about 70-80% of patients can expect a reduction in menstrual bleeding, and many women will even stop having menstrual periods. These procedures remove the lining of the uterus, therefore is only recommended if there are no future plans for pregnancy. There are no incisions and the uterus and cervix are left intact. Your ovaries will continue to function as expected for your age. Often a tubal sterilization is performed at the same time to ensure that pregnancy will not occur after an ablation.
Endometrial Ablation is done on an outpatient basis, with most patients back to work within a day or so following the procedure.
